Stepper Motor & Stepper Drive
Amazing things happen when engineering and technology come together. A perfect example is a stepper motor. Science has a way of its own and a stepper motoris one which converts electrical energy into mechanical energy.

It is an advanced version of a general motor however certain functions stills remains the same. Stepper motor or stepping motor or step motor as it is commonly called as is used in security surveillance products, industrial machinery, medical scanners, digital dental photography machine, respirators, fluid pumps and consumer electronics such as digital camera zoom and focus functions.

A basic stepper motor just like all other motors works on the principle of electromagnetism. A stepper motor converts a complete full rotation into equally segmented rotations or steps. Unlike other motors, a stepper motor converts electrical pulses into specific rotations which are precise and repeatable. Because of this characteristic, they are great for positioning applications.
Step motors are usually two-phase motors which can either be bipolar or unipolar in character. There are two windings per phase in unipolar stepper motor and there can be a common lead to the two windings which is centre tapped. In a unipolar motor, the leads can be either five, six or eight. In six leads, the common lead of the two poles is separated thus making six leads.
When the centre of two poles is short internally then it makes for a five lead motor. Eight lead motor is not connected and also have both series and parallel connection whereas for five and six lead motor it is only the series connection between stator coils.
Difference Between Unipolar & Bipolar Motor
Unipolar stepper motors help in simplifying the operation as the current in the driving circuit need not be reversed for operating them. They are also called bifilar motors.
Bipolar stepper motors have single windings per pole and are more complex than Unipolar motors. In this, the current needs to be changed using a driving circuit which makes it a complex one. It is also called a unifilar motor.
The performance of a stepper motor depends highly on the driver circuit. Stepper motor drivers are different and need to be purchased only from renowned shops or stepper motor drive suppliers. The drivers help in maintaining higher torque while limiting the current at the same time which is produced because of the high voltage.
Stepper Motor with Encoder
A stepper motor with encoder helps in providing positioning feedback and speed which are very important for the proper functioning of a motor. Since, these days, motors are widely used, so keeping track of the motion is very important and has to be done in a closed loop system. Hence, a stepper motor with the encoder is also called a closed-loop stepper motor. Three types of encoders are available to be used in stepper motors- Optical encoders, Magnetic encoders, and Magnetoresistance encoder. Each of them has different functions and provide different benefits when used with different applications.
